The Budapest group of ruling Fidesz „will not cooperate with those supporting Ferenc Gyurcsány’s candidate”, Alexandra Szentkirályi, the leader of the party’s Budapest chapter, said on Facebook. Szentkirályi added that Péter Magyar, leader of the opposition Respect and Freedom (Tisza) party, had proposed negotiations earlier in the day. Leftist Democratic Coalition leader Gyurcsány and Gergely Karácsony, Budapest’s incumbent mayor, „have driven the nation’s capital into bankruptcy and don’t deserve another chance”, Szentkirályi, who was Fidesz’s candidate for Budapest mayor but withdrew from the race before the recent municipal elections in favour of Dávid Vitézy, said.
