EP FIRST VICE-PRESIDENT: HUNGARY, TOO MUST COMPLY WITH EU RULES

Hungary must comply with the provisions of the Geneva Refugee Convention, the EU’s fundamental charter and EU laws and enforce them, those „cannot be negotiated”, Othmar Karas, the outgoing First Vice-President of the European Parliament representing the European People’s Party (EPP), said on Friday, in connection with a recent ruling by the Court of Justice of the EU. The CJEU on Thursday had ruled for fining Hungary 200 million euros for not complying with EU legislations on asylum and on returning illegal immigrants to their home countries. The court also ruled that Hungary should pay a fine of one million euros per day for a delay in complying with a ruling issued before.
In a statement, Karas said that the CJEU’s ruling „confirms” that Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s „unacceptable asylum policy is unlawful”. In the spirit of „loyal cooperation”, Hungary must observe the rules passed on the effective protection of external borders, the adoption of asylum procedure rules
at external borders and regarding the solidarity mechanism, the Austrian politician said.
