Claims that inmates in Hungarian prisons are exposed to higher risk of coronavirus infection than other members of society are unfounded, the justice ministry’s state secretary said on Thursday. Pál Völner was asked to respond to a letter the Hungarian Helsinki Committee had sent to the ombudsman in early April, asking him to urge prisons to ease overcrowding in light of the outbreak of the novel coronavirus epidemic. All preventative measures including overall disinfection have been taken in all of the country’s law enforcement facilities, Völner told public broadcaster Kossuth Rádió’s morning programme. The actual number of inmates is defined by criminal procedures, investigations and independent courts, he said.
