Strengthening the communities that form the basis of Hungarian society is an important objective of the government, the state secretary for ethnic Hungarian communities abroad said. Year 2020 is dedicated to strengthening communities in the mother country, in the Carpathian Basin and around the world, Árpád János Potápi told the 3rd annual meeting of weekend schools for Hungarians abroad. This includes families, youth and children that serve as a foundation of the Hungarian society, he added. He noted that schools in Denmark and New Zealand had also joined the scheme.
“The biggest such school is operating in Toronto and the largest network of them is in Bavaria,” he told the meeting of 114 school leaders representing 30 countries. Speaking about a major event this year, the centenary of the Trianon Peace Treaty, Potápi said it was important to commemorate 1920 and what had led to it, but it was even more important “to highlight moments when good things happened to the nation”.
