Magda Kósa Kovács, a former labour minister and MEP for the Hungarian Socialist Party died on Monday, aged 79, her family said. Kósa Kovács joined the Hungarian Socialist Workers’ Party in 1967. She was member of the post-transition Socialist Party between 1989 and 2011 and its lawmaker in Hungarian parliament between 1990 and 2004. She served as labour minister in the cabinet of Gyula Horn in 1994-1995. Kósa Kovács was elected MEP for the Socialists in 2004, and served in the post until 2009. She served as vice chair of the European Parliament’s Socialist Group between 2004 and 2007.
In 2011, she was co-founder of Hungary’s opposition Democratic Coalition (DK).
