ELECTION CTTEE REJECTS REFERENDUM BID ON 'NATIONAL CONSULTATION' SURVEYS

The National Election Committee (NVB) rejected a referendum initiative on regulating the way nationwide public surveys are conducted. The bid submitted by a private individual had aimed to require “National Consultation” surveys launched in Hungary to include questions from every parliamentary party in proportion to their number of seats. The NVB rejected the initiative saying that the question was unclear and that the “National Consultation” survey was a communication tool used by the government and therefore did not fall under parliament’s jurisdiction. The committee noted that only matters that are within parliament’s jurisdiction to legislate could be the subject of a nationwide referendum.
The committee also rejected a question on the construction of a sport stadium in southern Budapest to host the 2023 athletics world championship and one aimed at abolishing the requirement to wear face masks on public transport and at the workplace when a state of emergency is not in effect.
