JUSTICE MIN: EU MOBILITY PACKAGE PARTS IN CONFLICT WITH GREEN DEAL

Certain provisions of the European Union’s First Mobility Package, adopted on Wednesday, are in conflict with fundamental market freedoms of the community as well as its Green Deal aimed at climate neutrality, Justice Minister Judit Varga said on Facebook. By passing the Mobility Package, the European Parliament has “given the green light to protectionism”, the minister said. She argued that the package would weigh on road hauliers, reduce the competitiveness of the EU as a bloc and benefit carriers of third countries to the detriment of firms in central and eastern Europe. Varga noted that together with her counterparts in nine countries she had turned to all MEPs in June, asking them to drop proposals “violating the philosophy of the (EU’s) internal market”. She also said she regretted that it was expected that the European Council would approve the contested package.
