MI HAZÁNK DEMANDS POLICE PROTECTION FOR HORTHY BUST

The extra-parliamentary radical right Mi Hazánk party has demanded that police officers should watch a bust of Miklós Horthy, Hungary’s regent from 1920 to 1944, which has recently been vandalised. Mi Hazánk leader László Toroczkai told a press conference that the statue, inside a church in central Budapest, should be “similarly protected to the Dohány Street Synagogue”. The police must protect the monuments of “national heroes”, Toroczkai said, arguing that “what is happening in Western Europe and in the United States cannot happen in Hungary”. On July 3, a woman poured red paint on the Horthy bust.
