The national investigations office (NNI) has launched an investigation into recent remarks by Péter Niedermüller, opposition mayor of Budapest’s 7th district, pro-government civil group CÖF and associated CÖKA foundation said. NNI launched its probe on suspicion of Niedermüller’s “enticing hatred against a community”, based on a criminal complaint by CÖF-CÖKA. In their statement, CÖF-CÖKA voiced hope that “those enticing hatred on basis of race, gender, or sexual orientation will be duly punished irrespective of their political leanings”. Speaking on commercial television channel ATV on January 20, Niedermüller described white, Christian heterosexuals as a “scary formation”.
