GREENS CALL FOR NEW NUCLEAR WASTE TREATMENT STRATEGY

Hungary’s Green Party (formerly LMP) has announced a signature drive to make the government apply changes to the national strategy of nuclear waste disposal. Greens parliamentary group leader László Lóránt Keresztes slammed the government for its promoting nuclear energy, whereas, he said, it is “not cheap, nor is it environmentally friendly or safe”. He argued that calculations of the price of nuclear energy do not include costs of the closure of nuclear plants or those of nuclear waste disposal. Keresztes cited Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s 2015 pledge that residents in southern Hungary would be asked about plans to build a radioactive waste repository in the Boda area and said that those consultations have not taken place.
