The opposition LMP has called on the government to construct a railway line bypassing Budapest to ease the load of freight traffic around the city. An LMP official said the planned “1,000 billion forint [EUR 3.0bn] reconstruction” of the Budapest-Belgrade railway line is set to cross south Budapest, raising the area’s freight traffic by 40% and increasing noise and vibration. He called on the government to suspend the investment until a solution is found “to divert Hungary’s busiest future railway line” from a residential area in Budapest.
