MEP: DIALOGUE CONCERNING FIDESZ EPP MEMBERSHIP TO CONTINUE

Dialogue within the European People’s Party (EPP) will continue concerning the membership of Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party, György Hölvényi, MEP of the co-ruling Christian Democrats, told Hungarian journalists on the sidelines of an EPP meeting in Brussels. Hölvényi added that Fidesz’s “voluntary suspension” of its membership would stay in effect. The MEP quoted EPP president Donald Tusk as telling the meeting that the party group’s ad-hoc body of so-called wise men — Herman Van Rompuy, Wolfgang Schüssel and Hans-Gert Pöttering — had completed their report on the situation in Hungary. According to Tusk, there was no consensus between the three politicians “concerning the outcome of the evaluation”, but they agreed that Fidesz should remain suspended and dialogue should continue, Hölvényi said, adding that the meeting’s participants had not set a date for this.
