SOCIALISTS TO LAUNCH PUBLIC DEBATE ON EUROPEAN MINIMUM WAGE

The opposition Socialist Party is launching a social debate on the concept of a European minimum wage, the party’s deputy leader said. Hungarians deserve higher wages and a higher standard of living, Imre Komjáthi told a press conference, arguing that some 1.1 million workers in Hungary earned the minimum wage. Komjáthi said his party welcomed the European Commission’s move to launch consultations with businesses and unions on a proposal to create a common EU framework for the minimum wage. He noted that the EC’s proposal does not call for the introduction of a uniform minimum wage across every sector of the economy, but rather a uniform set of rules for its calculation.
