DK CALLS PARLT CTTEE MEETING TO ADDRESS MATTER OF HUNGARIAN TROOPS IN IRAQ

The opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) has proposed a meeting of parliament’s defence committee to discuss whether Hungarian troops should be withdrawn from Iraq for security reasons in light of the recent killing of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani.
Committee member Ágnes Vadai (DK) noted in a statement on Sunday that NATO and the US had suspended training operations in Iraq after the Friday killing. The NATO-US mission includes 200 Hungarian troops, currently stationed in Erbil, she added. It is the government’s responsibility to ensure the lives of no Hungarian soldiers are put at risk, Vadai said in her statement, and demanded that Defence Minister Tibor Benkő should provide detailed information at the proposed session.
