PÁRBESZÉD CALLS ON MATOLCSY TO RESIGN

The opposition Párbeszéd party called on the governor of the National Bank of Hungary (NBH), György Matolcsy, to resign, saying he had “misled” the public for years over funds flowing to the central bank’s foundations. Matolcsy had said that the monies of the Pallas Athéné Foundations were not considered public funds, Párbeszéd lawmaker Sándor Burány noted. The government has “recently admitted that they lied and the monies were part of the general government,” he added. Burány said the European Union’s statistical institute, Eurostat, “considered Hungarian deficit and budget data unreliable for years” due to the foundations’ position, and called on Matolcsy and “those responsible” to resign.
