GOVT OFFICIAL URGES DISCUSSION OF BUDAPEST DEVELOPMENTS IN APPROPRIATE FORUM

Balázs Fürjes, the secretary for development in the capital and environs, suggested Budapest’s new leadership should take up the issue of the Liget project, a planned museums quarter in the City Park, in the forum provided by the Budapest Public Development Council (FKT) in an interview with daily Magyar Nemzet.
The FKT can also provide a platform for discussion of the “Budapest, Sports Capital” programme, Fürjes said.
Magyar Nemzet noted that Gergely Karácsony, who was elected mayor of Budapest with the support of opposition parties a week earlier, has said the new local council will cease the issue of building permits for the Liget project, while he vetoes the construction of more stadiums in the capital.
Furjes told the paper that the central government will strive for a fair and candid cooperation with Budapest’s new local council, and the most important platform for this cooperation is the FKT in which developments can be decided with a unanimous vote by city and government leaders. A meeting of the FKT can be called after the new local council is formed, and it would be worthwhile to invite Liget project head László Baán, who can make a case for the developments, he added.
