ANALYST: BATTLE FOR POSITIONS HEATING UP AMONG OPPOSITION

Hungary’s opposition parties have realised that their options are increasingly limited and their battles for what they believe to be attainable positions are “becoming ever fiercer”, a political analyst told public broadcaster M1 over the weekend. Örs Farkas said the opposition parties had been locked in a battle with each other for years. He said the situation was beginning to become “comical”, as opposition candidates were “trying to give the impression that they are greatly needed while some of them were already rejected by voters in last year’s general election”. He said the ruling Fidesz-Christian Democrat alliance was in the advantageous position heading into the autumn local elections that they have held the majority of mayorships and local councils since 2006, arguing that their mayors were now close to the people.
