There were fewer births and more deaths in Hungary in the first two months of the year compared with the same period a year earlier, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said. Fully 5.1% fewer children (13,891) were born in January and February compared with the same months a year earlier, while the number of deaths (26,106) increased by 11%. The rate of natural population decline (3,230) was 36% higher compared with the same period last year. The number of marriages declined, with 3,319 couples tying the knot, down 72 compared with the first two months of 2018.
