Hungary and Serbia will install a precipitation and flash flood early warning system in an EU-funded cross border project, the directorate for the Hungarian project partner said. Flash floods occur more frequently in central Europe due to extreme and uneven dispersion of rain caused by climate change, a department of Szeged University in southern Hungary told MTI. These floods pose serious risks and can cause severe damage to urban areas in the region, the public relations department said in a statement. The monitoring system will be developed by the Szeged and Novi Sad (Újvidék) universities in cooperation with project partners and cover a broader area around the two cities. The EU is providing 750,000 euros to support the project.
