UPGRADED PAKS TO BE 'SAFE, COMPETITIVE'

Hungary’s Paks nuclear plant, once its upgrade is complete, will be “safe, competitive and well-functioning”, Pál Kovács, state secretary in charge of the upgrade project, told this year’s Atomexpo forum in Sochi. The state secretary added that the upgraded facility will “meet European standards in every one of its components”. Russia’s Rosatom, the project’s general contractor, “regularly supplies its plans necessary for the construction permits”, Kovács said, noting that the project has already been granted an environmental protection permit. On Sunday, Kovács met Rosatom leaders, including Alexey Likhachev, and discussed the project’s progress. Fully 3,600 participants from 74 countries are attending the 11th Atomexpo, which is organised by Rosatom.
