HUNGARY, SLOVENIA PRESIDENTS COMMEMORATE 1956 UPRISING

President János Áder and his Slovenian counterpart Borut Pahor participated in a reception in Ljubljana on Friday, marking the upcoming anniversary of Hungary’s failed anti-Soviet uprising, which started on October 23, 1956.
In his address, the Slovenian president said that the event was dedicated to the memory of “courageous people, who stood up for important ideas and values”. Referring to the “many vicissitudes” Slovenians and Hungarians went through in the past 75 years, Pahor said that the experience gained through hardships should be used to promote “peace, security, cooperation, solidarity, mutual understanding and freedom”. Áder said that some 2,000 Hungarian refugees had found shelter in Slovenia after the uprising was stifled, and thanked Slovenian people for helping and treating them as friends. He went on to say that the memory of 1956 has been a link ever since with those who “similarly to us, know the real value of national independence and sovereignty”.
