SZIJJÁRTÓ CONDOLES OVER PITTSBURGH ATTACK

Hungary’s foreign minister has sent a letter of “solidarity and support” to his US counterpart over Saturday’s attack on a synagogue in Pittsburgh.

In his letter to Mike Pompeo, Péter Szijjártó called the lone terrorist’s act “unbelievably evil and shocking”. He expressed sympathy with the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to all those injured. The minister noted the Hungarian government’s “zero tolerance policy” against anti-Semitism and rejection of any form of racism. “Hungary stands with the United States in the difficult days after the tragedy,” Szijjártó added. The US and Israel can always rely on Hungary’s support in their fight against terrorism and anti-Semitism, the minister wrote.
On Saturday, 46-year-old Robert Bowers opened fire during the Sabbath service at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue, killing eleven people and wounding six.
President János Áder has also condemned the attack and expressed hope that such hate crimes would never occur again and that people would be allowed to exercise their religion freely, without fear, all over the world.
Hungarian Jewish organisations have said they were praying for and commemorating victims of the shooting.
