DK launches signature drive in support of direct mayoral election in Budapest

The leftist opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) has launched a signature drive in support of the direct mayoral election system in Budapest. DK city councillor Erzsébet Gy. Németh told a news conference that ever since Mayor István Tarlós indicated that he might not run for the post again in the future, some politicians of ruling Fidesz have suggested that the system of directly electing the mayor of Budapest could be discontinued.
Fidesz is afraid of suffering a defeat in Budapest in 2019 the same way as they were defeated on April 8 this year, she said, referring to the parliamentary elections of 2018. In Budapest “the opposition holds a two-thirds majority,” she said. “Fidesz must not take away the chance from Budapest residents to elect their mayor,” Gy. Németh added.
