SZEGED WINS EC AWARD FOR URBAN TRANSPORT DEVELOPMENT

Szeged has won this year’s Civitas Legacy Award granted by the European Commission for developing cleaner and better urban transport, the deputy mayor of the south Hungarian city said. The award is given annually in recognition of the implementation of innovative urban transport solutions under European standards over the long term, Sándor Nagy said.

Szeged received the gong for the large-scale upgrade of its tram and trolleybus network, the expansion of cycle paths and docks, and the installation of a pay-pass system for the entire fleet. These projects have already borne fruit, Nagy said, noting that the proportion of public transport users is between 37-38%, the highest among major cities, while 17% cycle and 23-24% prefer journeying by car.
